Martin Akwiranoron Loft Exhibit
We hope you will join us for an exciting new exhibit of the artwork of Martin Akwiranoron Loft in the loggia of Stauffer Library from March 8 to March 22.
Martin Loft is a Mohawk artist from Kahnawake, specialized in printmaking, and will be on campus as a guest lecturer for a course in the Departments of LLCU and French Studies. Loft also graciously agreed to share some of his work with the campus. This activity is generously sponsored by the Elizabeth McKenzie Shemilt Fund at the Department of Languages, Literatures and Cultures.
Statement from the artist
My art is a reflection of who I am as an Indigenous person (Kanien’keha:ka). As an artist, I strive to incorporate the iconography, teachings, and themes as a source of inspiration for my artistic production in a modern setting. I believe each image is a spark of creativity revealed in a tangible form….an artifact representing my personal truth and journey. Whether I am working in the medium of photography, printmaking, silver-smithing, or digital arts, I strive to represent this aspect of myself through creativity, cultural reflection, and historical concerns.
