The inaugural issue of Advances in Engineering Education, a new journal published by ASEE, is now available. The journal’s mission “is to disseminate significant, proven innovations in engineering education practice, especially those that are best presented through the creative use of multimedia.”
This sounds like an excellent place to publish librarian-faculty collaborative work in the area of information literacy.
Given ASEE’s focus on the globalisation of engineering during the last ten years, and its recent attempts to expand and strengthen connections with the international community of engineering educators, I’m a little surprised that AEE’s board doesn’t have an international editor.

If you use esp@cnet as a teaching or research tool, the following might be of interest to you.
The EPO is running an online survey to gather feedback on what users find most and least useful about esp@cenet, and access to free patent information in general. The EPO has an excellent track record of listening to users, so don’t miss this opportunity to suggest improvements. For example, I’d like to have the ability to sort search results, download bib data to a spreadsheet or citation software, and better integration of the ECLA classification search.
Unfortunately, the survey designers forgot to include Canada in the list of countries that users may select to identify their location. A request for correction has been made.

An interesting new search portal:
Thirteen science and technology societies from across the world are set to launch scitopia.org, a free federated vertical search portal, in a bid to create more direct access to their collective content. The new portal, to be launched in June 2007, will enable users to explore the research most cited in scholarly work and patents in a single click.
Founding partners include the American Geophysical Union, American Institute for Aeronautics and Astronautics, American Institute of Physics, American Physical Society, American Society of Civil Engineers, American Society of Mechanical Engineers, the Electrochemical Society, IEEE, Institute of Physics Publishing, Optical Society of America, SPIE, Society of Automotive Engineers and Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics. Other organisations will be invited to join as the project progresses.
Access to actual content will still of course be via institution subscriptions.
