Frequently Asked Questions - Borrowing, Loans, Fines

How do I pay my library fines?

See Paying Fines & Fees for detailed information. In brief:

  • Students pay their library fines through the University Registrar (using the same payment methods you would use to pay your tuition and other university fees).
  • Non-students (faculty, staff, community members) can pay at the circulation desk, or by mail. 

 

Can Alumni borrow from the Library?

The Library's mission is to support the teaching and research programs of Queen's University. While the Library's primary function is to provide collections and services to the Queen's community, alumni and local area residents and visitors are welcome to come into the libraries at Queen's and use the facilities.

Can I borrow a USB key, a network cable, ... ?

Yes! Different Library locations have different items available for 3 hour loan. Some examples: USB keys, network cables, calculators, headphones, mice. Search QCAT for items held by different libraries, or ask at the Circulation Desk.

Can I borrow video and film from other Ontario Universities?

If you unable to locate a video or film in QCAT, you may be able to borrow through the Ontario Universities Interfilm Service. Use Queen's Audio Visual Equipment Services to search, request and borrow films.

Can I pick up books at any library on campus?

Yes. Queen's Library offers an all-library book retrieval service, where students, faculty and staff can request that material on the shelf in one campus library be sent to another campus library for pickup by the requestor. Placing a request is easy! Check here for instructions.

Can I request materials from other Queen's libraries?

An intercampus service is available for patrons who need to request materials from any of the Queen's Libraries. Information on how to use this service and details on eligibility and restrictions can be found at Book Retrieval Service.

Can I return books to any library on campus?

Yes, you can return books to any library on campus. Please consult Campus Book Drop-Off Service for a list of items not eligible for this service.

Can I view the pictures on my camera at a Library computer?

Yes! Just ask at the Stauffer Library Circulation Desk for the Memory Card Reader.

How many times can books be renewed?

When you sign out regular material, you are guaranteed a minimum two-week loan. Beyond that period, books are subject to recall if they are out on a term loan or a hold can be placed on them if they are out on a two-week loan.

Books can be renewed an unlimited number of times unless they are required by another patron.

Note: Reserve material cannot be renewed online through your library account.

How much do Interlibrary Loans cost?

The costs for Interlibrary Loans are as follows:

  • No charge for the loan of books, microfilm, or other "returnable" items.
  • $3 for photocopies of articles or book chapters.
  • To purchase a thesis, go to Interlibrary Loans and Document Delivery.
  • All charges are due when the requested material is picked up

I am a local resident not connected to Queen's. Can I borrow books from the library?

Yes. We offer services for non-Queen's local residents. You are welcome to visit any Queen's library and use the resources in-house. If you wish to sign out material, there is a yearly fee for this service.

You can fill out the Library Card Application Form, print it off and bring it to the Circulation Desk in any of the campus libraries (except the Jordan Library) to get your card.

I am a university student not enrolled at Queen's. Can I borrow books?

Yes. Students who are registered at other Canadian universities may apply for a Queen's library card by filling in an application form (available at Bracken, Education, Engineering and Science, Law, and Stauffer Libraries) and by presenting a valid student card from their home university along with another piece of personal identification. Similarly, faculty employed at other Canadian universities may apply for a Queen's library card by presenting a valid staff card from their home university along with another piece of personal identification.  read more »

I am an RMC student, can I borrow books from Queen's?

As an RMC student, you may borrow material from the Queen's Library by simply presenting a valid RMC student card and one piece of identification at any circulation desk (Bracken, Education, Engineering and Science, Law, or Stauffer Library). You will be set up in our patron record database and may borrow up to 50 books for a two-week period. Material may be renewed unless required by another patron.

I'm a teacher, can I borrow books from the Education Library?

Yes, teachers can borrow books from the Education Library. If you go to the circulation desk at the Education Library you can fill out an application.

My student card was stolen. What happens now?

You may not borrow material without a valid student card. If you have lost your card or it was stolen, please report this immediately to the Registrar's Office. There is a fee for replacing a student card.

What are your Interlibrary Loans Policies?

There are three Document Delivery/Interlibrary Loan units at Queen's, each responsible for serving the needs of the patrons within their "home" areas. If you have a question about an interlibrary loan request, contact the appropriate unit.

What do I do if the book I want is already signed out?

You may recall the book if it is already signed out on a term loan (due back on either May 15, September 15 or January 15).

If the book is signed out on a two-week loan, you may place a hold on the book.  read more »

What is the course reserve service?

Queen's University Library offers a Course Reserves service for Faculty, Instructors and Teaching Assistants to place course material into a short loan collection which helps ensure fair access to required readings for all students.
