What is RefWorks?
RefWorks is a web-based bibliographic management tool (often called a "citation manager"). Features:
- Establish your own personal database of citations
- Save citations from database and library catalogue searches
- Produce bibliographies formatted in any of the major bibliographic styles (e.g. APA, MLA, Chicago, etc.). RefWorks supports over 200 different bibliographic styles
- Share your databases with others (using RefShare)
- Integration with MS Word (via the Write-n-cite plugin)
- 1 GB account/database size
RefWorks is freely available to all Queen's students, faculty, alumni and staff as an online service provided by Queen's University Library and Ontario Scholars Portal.
Queen's RefWorks Accounts
Sign Up for a New RefWorks Account
Here's how to sign up for a free RefWorks account through Queen's University:
- Go to the Queen's RefWorks Login page (note: if you are off-campus, you will first be asked to enter your NetID)
- Click New to RefWorks? Sign up for an Individual Account.
Who is Eligible for a Queen's RefWorks Account
All Queen's students, faculty, alumni and staff can create and use RefWorks accounts.
Queen's Alumni can use RefWorks by providing the Queen's RefWorks Group Code (see below) when they log into RefWorks.
Queen's RefWorks Group Code
- Group Code RefWorks Login - no Queen's NetID required
The Queen's RefWorks Group Code allows you to access RefWorks from off-campus without needing to provide a Queen's NetID and password. There are three different ways to look up the Queen's Group Code:
- Check the "Thank You for Registering with RefWorks" email that you receive when you first sign up for a Queen's RefWorks account
- Visit the Queen's RefWorks Group Code page (active Queen's users only, NetID required for off-campus access)
- For Alumni: Email the Library and request that we email you the Queen's Group Code. You may be asked to provide evidence that you are indeed an alumni.
Multiple RefWorks Accounts
As long as you are a Queen's student, employee, alumni or retiree, you can register for as many RefWorks accounts as you need. For example, you will want to create a personal account for your own assignments and/or research, but you also might want to create other accounts for group projects which you are involved in. Access to these group accounts can be shared among other members of the specific group.
RefWorks Tools and Add-ons
Several add-ons, to facilitate personal and group research, are available to all Queen's account-holders as part of the Library's RefWorks subscription:
- Write-n-Cite - a plugin (PC and Mac) that allows you to use RefWorks with MS Word in your word processor (Write-n-Cite tutorial)
- RefGrab-It - works with your browser to capture bibliographic information from web pages
