KEYWORD SEARCH GUIDE FOR FINDING INDEXES & DATABASES / E-JOURNALS

Type your words in the exact order of the phrase and do NOT use quotation marks, e.g.

Type this: To find:
film index international the exact phrase film index international

Use the "boolean" connectors & [and] / [or] ! [not] between your words and phrases, e.g.

Type this: To find:
new york & historical items containing both the word "historical" and the phrase "new york"
(journal / review) & canadian historical items containing either the word "journal" or "review", and the phrase "canadian historical"
psycinfo ! ovid items containing the word "psycinfo" but not the word "ovid"

NOTE:   Words joined by & / ! are evaluated in left-to-right order. For example: red & white / blue finds items that contain "red" and "white", or items that contain "blue". Use parentheses to control evaluation order: For example, red & (white / blue) finds index items that contain "red" and "white" OR "red" AND "blue".

To Find Variations of Words

Use an asterisk [*] at the end of a word stem, e.g.

Type this: To find:
journal & gastro* items containing the word "journal" and all variant forms of words beginning with "gastro"
(journal / review) & canad* & histor* items containing either the word "journal" or "review", and various forms of words starting with "canad", and various forms of words starting with "histor"

To Find Words Near Each Other

Use the proximity operators w# [within] and p# [preceding], e.g.

Type this: To find:
politic* w5 world* items containing any form of the word "politic" within 5 words of any form of the word “world” (terms can be in either order). DO NOT include phrases.
canadian p5 review items containing the word "canadian" within 5 words BEFORE the word "review"
