Announcing DMP Assistant, a new bilingual data management planning tool

Posted: November 3rd, 2015

As part of its Portage initiative, the Canadian Association of Research Libraries (CARL) recently launched DMP Assistant, an open, web-based, bilingual data management planning tool made available to all researchers in Canada.

Data management plans (DMPs) are widely recognized in the international research community as a best practice. DMP Assistant takes users through a series of questions based on a general template for research data stewardship, and provides specialized guidance to help researchers develop their plan. It also offers the option of fulfilling DMP requirements of specific funders or using templates from other organizations. Martha Whitehead, Vice-Provost and University Librarian, and president of CARL says, “The tool was developed to meet the needs of researchers, with input from them and from the broader stakeholder community. Queen’s is very pleased to be part of this national initiative and to offer the tool to our own researchers.”

Jeff Moon is a Data Librarian, and Academic Director of Queen’s Research Data Centre. He says that this new tool will be an essential component of the services we offer researchers at the library, “We have a data management service, and we would welcome the opportunity to help researchers, whether they are planning a project or they already have data. Ideally a researcher will use the DMP Assistant at the outset and return to the tool throughout the research process. We are happy to be involved at any step in the process”.

DMP Assistant is available at: https://portagenetwork.ca or https://reseauportage.ca.
