What is Happening in the Stauffer Library Loggia?

Posted: November 22nd, 2006

Construction in the Stauffer Library RotundaIf you have passed through the Stauffer Library Loggia recently, scaffolding and drilling and other signs of construction activity have been hard to miss.

What’s going on?!

The activity is preparation for installation of a cafe, scheduled to open in Winter 2007. The cafe service point will be in the Rotunda area (shown in the adjacent photograph). Six booths for cafe seating will be built in the open area leading toward the Union Gallery.

Menu items available at the new cafe will include hot and cold drinks, as well as cold food such as sandwiches, pastries, cookies, etc. No hot food will be served (with the exception of hot beverages). The coffee will be Fair Trade blends.

As much as possible, cafe construction is being done off site, to minimise noise and dust. We thank library patrons for their understanding during this construction period.

do we really need another spot for coffee on this campus? its not that hard to walk across the street to the JDUC-just a thought

  2. Daniel Says:

what will the hours of the cafe be, and will they accept flex dollar/convenience cash?

  3. Eddie Says:

I think this is a great idea. Common ground’s service isnt that great anyways – long lines, no sugar. Plus, Stuaffer is a much more accessible building (disability wise and access wisE), so even if you are not working in Stauffer, you’ll be able to grab snacks easily.

  4. Nancy Petri Says:

The hours that the cafe will be open have yet to be finalized. As for the payment methods, both flex and convenience cash will be accepted.

We will update our information regarding the cafe opening as more details become available.

  5. Jonas Says:

Are there any plans for keeping noise down for library patrons? Are there any plans for using ceramic (i.e. reusable) dishes so as to reduce waste?

  6. jose Says:

Whoever thought this up obviously didn’t think it though. Stauffer is by design an incredibly echoey building. Putting a ‘cafe’ at the lobby where people go for quiet study was a terrible idea. The noise of the people, the machinery, and the chairs is bound to reach the second floor. This is bound to make Stauffer ineffective as a learning environement.

  7. Sasha Says:

Is anyone at this school sick of eating pastries, coffee, and sodexho sandwiches? I’m not quite seeing how having 3 coffee and sandwich shops adjacent to eachother makes any sense. All this money could certainly be more well spent.

  8. Anthony Says:

It’s about time! If it were up to me we’d have coffee bars on every floor. Any chance it will brew Starbucks blends?

  9. Elena Says:

I agree with the previous post, I don’t think that common ground is all that great. I mean the food is all right, but the hot beverages aren’t too appealing..!
And I don’t believe it’s just my personal preference, others have voiced the same opinion.
Yet… hopefully this cafe serves better beverages, and the only way to do that is to have starbucks blends! (haha!) Seriously though,

    Cheers! :)

  10. Wendy Huot (librarian) Says:

We at the library are still a little unsure about the specifics of the coffee and food selection at the new cafe. However, we do know that the coffee will be Fair Trade but it will NOT be Starbucks (a good or a bad thing, depending on your preferences).

I’m a little sick of those sodexho sandwitches as well, so *hopefully* this new cafe will provide a little more variety to the standard cafe offerings on campus.

  11. Anthony Says:

That’s definitely a bad thing for me. I sense a few more long trips to the Starbucks on Division before this year is over…

  12. Nancy Petri, Library Administration Says:

In response to Jonas’ post of December 5th:

The only anticipated additional noise will be from the espresso machine. Food Services have purchased the smallest machine possible to reduce the noise generated. In addition this machine will have a shroud around it that will act as an added sound barrier. Given the limited space they were unable to include a dishwasher in the plans therefore ceramic dishes will not be used at this time. However, they will be encouraging the use of travel mugs etc. and will also continue to investigate alternative solutions to the waste generated.

  13. Nancy Petri, Library Administration Says:

In response to Jose’s concern about the noise of tables and chairs, posted on December 9th:

The new seating in the library is in the form of booths that are fixed to the floor, not cafe tables and chairs.

  14. Nancy Petri, Library Administration Says:

In response to Sasha’s post of December
    11th:

Surveys conducted by Queen’s Food Services over the years have identified that students do want a coffee outlet in Stauffer. The menu will be slightly different from other outlets nearby.

  15. Nancy Petri, Library Administration Says:

In response to Anthony’s post of December 12th and others:

This is to confirm that the cafe will not be brewing Starbucks blends but we will have coffee from a local suppier who grinds the coffee in Kingston.

  16. Andrew Velan Says:

Will they be hiring anytime soon? How can I apply for a job?

  17. John Says:

I think this is a terrible idea, within a 1min walking radius there are now five coffee shops (JDUC, cogro, goodes, maccorrey, stauffer) two of which will presumeably be open late. This ‘cafe’ will no doubt create unneeded people-noise around the entrance of the library, as it will become a place to socialize. So much for the Queens’ “learning commons.” I think everyone is sick of Sodexho coffee and pastries.
