Catalyst for Discovery: A Three-Year Strategic Plan for Queen’s University Library

    Posted: December 6th, 2006

Catalyst for Discovery: A Three-Year Strategic Plan for Queen’s University Library was completed in September 2006. The Library undertook a brief planning process in early 2006 in anticipation of a new University strategic plan, and Catalyst for Discovery was designed to meld with the University’s direction and priorities as outlined in Principal Hitchcock’s discussion paper Engaging the World and Queen’s Draft Strategic Plan of April 2006.

With the release of Engaging the World: A Strategic Plan for Queen’s University, the Library has a new framework for its strategic directions and we are pleased to see that the goals we established in Catalyst for Discovery are in alighment with the University’s articulation of values, principles and goals. For example, the Library’s themes relate directly to the University’s emphasis on an active learning environment, inquiry-based learning and critical thinking: the Library’s information services and educational programs, its collections and its physical and virtual spaces will be critical to Queen’s principle of engaging our students. Engaging the World was approved unanimously by Queen’s Senate yesterday, and goes before the Board of Trustees at their regular business meeting this evening for a ratification vote. (See http://qnc.queensu.ca/campusnews_article_loader.php?id=456b037f41e30).

Catalyst for Discovery is a live document. Each of the Library’s units and teams has developed a set of activities and initiatives related to the goals of the plan, and these will evolve over the next three years, as user expectations change and new opportunities arise. These activities and initiatives, along with background on our planning process, are available for all to explore at http://library.queensu.ca/stratplan/.
