New ebooks added to our collection

Posted: June 28th, 2007

This past weekend, over 200 new e-books were added to the Queen’s University Library collection. Most of these are in the areas of business and computing, but there are many health science related titles as well such as “Brain damage and repair : from molecular research to clinical therapy” (edited by T Herdegen & J Delgado-Garcia), “Foot and ankle arthroscopy” (edited by JF Guhl et al), and “Handbook of bioethics : taking stock of the field from a philosophical perspective” (edited by G Khushf).

You can find any of these titles using the keywords “springer” and “myilibrary” along with keywords or subject terms for the topic you are interested in. Remember, if you ever need any help finding anything in the library or using any information access tool, ask your librarian.

Librarians Collaborate with Family Physicians

Posted: June 28th, 2007

Family Physicians Inquiries Network (FPIN) offers opportunities for medical librarians to collaborate with family physicians on developing “Clinical Inquiries,” evidence-based synopses of clinical literature, which are published in the Journal of Family Practice, in American Family Physician, and on the FPIN Website. The University of North Carolina (UNC) Department of Family Medicine is supporting this collaboration by offering potential faculty appointments for UNC and North Carolina Area Health Education Centers librarians who coauthor “Clinical Inquiries.” Leonora Kaufmann is the first FPIN librarian to receive faculty appointment as a clinical assistant professor.”

Read more about the librarian’s role as co-author of clinical inquiries, librarian co-authorship process (pdf), and FPIN in general.

This technology is not useful just for the novelty of communicating and seeing others in a life-like way, but, as the video of open heart surgery in the demonstration mentioned in the article tried to show, it can be vital in teaching certain subjects effectively.
