SciFinder Scholar on the Web – upgrade and warning

A new version of SciFinder Scholar is now available. Updates include:

  • direct links to data
  • keep me posted enhancements
  • improved search precision
  • session history retention
  • index term linking
  • new layouts

Warning: Off-campus access is currently is unavailable and Mac users must avoid using Safari 3.2. Both problems are due to vendor software bugs and CAS is working to resolve them.

2009 Inquiry @ Queens Undergraduate Research Conference – Call for Presenters

The 3rd Annual Inquiry@Queen’s Undergraduate Research Conference will be held in the Queen’s Learning Commons, Stauffer Library, March 5-6, 2009.   The conference is an opportunity for undergraduate students with research project results to showcase the results of their research.   A wide range of projects qualify: ­ directed study projects, honours theses, co-op or practicum projects, volunteer research and more!

As a presenter you will sharpen post-graduate and career skills, such as critical thinking and effective writing and presenting, and you will engage in scholarly communication with students and faculty from many disciplines.

Classical Scores Library

Classical Scores Library contains 400,000 pages of classical music scores, manuscripts and previously unpublished material, allowing for the study and analysis of more than 8,000 musical scores.   The database provides access to multiple types of scores across various composers, genres and time periods.  Included are:

  • full scores
  • study scores
  • piano and vocal scores
  • piano reductions
  • opera, vocal and choral texts which allow for deep searching and textual analysis

Queen’s Library has been able to acquire this new subscription thanks to the 2008 Digital Content Infrastructure for the Human and Social Sciences (DCI) Project, led by the Canadian Research Knowledge Network (CRKN).

Environmental Impact – trial access to database

Environmental Impact pools together information on the effects of climate change on the terrestrial and freshwater biosphere, including crop production, plant pests and diseases, human and animal health, natural resources and tourism.

It also covers other aspects of human’s impact on the environment such as pollution, deforestation, desertification and habitat loss. The resource also offers the latest information on adaptation and mitigation strategies such as production and utilization of biofuels and fuelwood, creation of ‘habitat corridors’, enhanced carbon sequestration, agroforestry and restoration ecology.

Queen’s Library has trial access to Environmental Impact until November 30, 2008.  Test it — and let us know your opinion of this product.

ScienceDirect E-Journals & E-Books Unavailable Sat Night (Nov 1, 2008)

All e-journals and e-books published by Elsevier and made available on the ScienceDirect platform will be unavailable from 9 pm on Saturday, 1 November 2008 until 8 am on Sunday, 2 November 2008.  The outage is required “to support scheduled maintenance” on the publisher’s web server.

Bracken Library Workshops for Graduate Students

Researching Patents for Scientists and Engineers – Workshop

Patents are an important source of scientific, medical and technical information, much of which is not published in journals. This workshop will show you how you can access the wealth of information in patent literature and provide you with strategies for searching patent databases. You will learn the basic principals of the patent system and why it is important to monitor the patent literature. You will also learn the format of a patent document and how it compares to a journal article, how to download patent documents and cite patent literature.

Bracken Library Closed Oct. 18 & 19, 2008

October 14, 2008 marks the first Open Access Day – an initiative of three important organizations central to advocating for more openness in scholarship and research: SPARC, the Public Library of Science, and Students for FreeCulture.

ASTM standards, full-text, online – new subscription

New subscription!

Queen’s faculty, staff and students now have online access to the full-text of active ASTM Standards published by ASTM International.

This collection of technical standards for materials, products, systems, and services can be searched by designation or keyword.  Alternatively, one also can browse by area of interest or view the alphanumeric listing of standards.
