Author Guidelines

GEMS is the official on-line journal of GRIME International. We encourage scholars from a wide variety of disciplines pertaining to gender, education, music, and sociology to submit articles and pedagogical spotlights so as to facilitate a broad and far-ranging debate on critical issues in the field. All articles and pedagogical spotlights submitted undergo blind review by two members of the internationally recognized Editorial Board and guests. The co-editors make the final decisions where there is some ambiguity. Reviews are selected for publication by the co-editors; see below for details on writing reviews. GEMS Blog contributions are monitored by the co-editors for relevance, suitability, and appropriateness; see below for details on contributing to GEMS Blog. Article and pedagogical spotlights manuscripts should be submitted electronically at http://library.queensu.ca/ojs/index.php/gems/about/submissions#onlineSubmissions. They should be concise, yet sufficiently detailed to permit adequate communication and critical review. Attributed audio, image, and/or video content is welcome. If not using original or Creative Commons licensed images, it is the author’s responsibility to obtain copyright permission prior to submission. All link URLs must be provided by the author. Submissions of articles and pedagogical spotlights should contain no specific indication of the author(s)' name or institutional affiliation so as to permit blind review. Authors for article and pedagogical spotlights submissions should follow the style of the The Chicago Manual of Style, (15th edition), Author-Date System. Footnotes, placed at the bottom of the page, should be used sparingly. Non-sexist language guidelines may be reviewed at http://societymusictheory.org/administration/committees/women/language. Reviews of books, websites, media, music compositions and/or performances, software applications, or other resources should be submitted electronically at http://library.queensu.ca/ojs/index.php/gems/about/submissions#onlineSubmissions. They should follow style guidelines above, and include all relevant information identifying the material under review; for example, title, author (composer, performer, programmer), publisher, date of publication, URL. Written in terms of the material’s relevance for readers of GEMS, reviews should describe the scope, organization, focus and/or goal of the material, and critically evaluate, as appropriate and relevant, the author’s argument, the composition’s and/or performance’s achievements, the media’s or website’s usability and/or elegance, for example. The GEMS Blog is hosted externally. Contributions for blog entries should consist of comments, thoughts, and announcements exploring a wide variety of topics related to gender/sexuality/social change and music in the context of an online interactive community. Submit GEMS Blog entries to gems.grime.journal@gmail.com.

  2. The submission file is in Microsoft Word document file format, and is double-spaced; uses a 12-point Times New Roman font; employs italics, rather than underlining (except with URL addresses); use of endnotes, not footnotes; and all illustrations, figures, and tables are placed within the text at the appropriate points, rather than at the end.
  3. When available, URLs for the references have been provided.
