Focus and Scope
The International Journal for Service Learning in Engineering: Humanitarian Engineering and Social Entrepreneurship is a peer-reviewed electronic journal offered free, semi-annually, over the World Wide Web. The Journal welcomes manuscripts based on original work with a specific focus or implication for service learning in engineering, engineering entrepreneurship in service, or related service learning pedagogy.
With an increasing number of individuals and institutions of higher education becoming involved in service learning and entrepreneurship in service learning, the IJSLE is an invaluable resources for faculty, practicing engineers and local communities. With articles relating to the latest design and research pertinent to local communities, the faculty-reviewed articles in each issue provide the reader with timely information related to:
- Engineering Design Projects as Service
- Engineering Research Projects as Service
- Engineering-Related Entrepreneurial Projects as Service
- Pedagogy in Engineering-Related Service Learning

Articles
Authors may submit articles at any time for future issues of IJSLE (see Publication Schedule). As IJSLE is an open-access journal, accepted articles will be available online and open to everyone after a peer review process (see Open Access Policy & Review Process Policy).
Peer Review Process
The reviewer is to be an experienced faculty member or practicing engineer with experience and competency in the discipline addressed in the article which they will be reviewing.
The manuscript editor will forward the article(s) to be reviewed to the Reviewer. Upon completion of the review, the Reviewer will complete the evaluation form found on the website and submit it to the manuscript editor.
On the evaluation form, reviewers will rate articles on criteria within six major categories on a scale from 1 to 5, with ‘1’ being Weak and ‘5’ being Exceptional. The total "score" generated from this review will be added to the reviewer's comments to decide on whether an article is ready for publication.
The six major categories of judging are:
- What do the Researchers Wish to Find Out? - Objectives
- Why is it Important to Understand or Investigate? – Literature Review - along with Community Needs and Assessment
- How is the Project Investigated? – Methods and Procedures
- Project Results
- Discussion
- Writing Style

Review Guidelines
- When the Editor selects you to review a new submission, you will receive e-mail notification. This notice will include the manuscript for review as an attachment and will specify the due date for submitting the review.
- When you are ready to submit your review, log in with your username and password. Access the review page by clicking the link to log in as a “Reviewer” under IJSLE.
- Under Review Steps, click the envelope icon next to “Will do the review” at Step 1. Tip: You will not be able to complete subsequent steps until you have clicked the “Will do the review” icon.
- Click on the page icon labeled “Review Form” under Step 3 and fill out the form following the directions on the form. Click “Save.” When finished, click “Close.” Tip: An oddity in OJS is that once you’ve entered your comments in the box, you must first click the “Save” button and then click the “Close” button to successfully submit your review.
- Step 4 gives you the option of uploading files (for example, if you prefer to upload the document containing your review feedback rather than copy-and-paste these comments into the final comments box on the Review Form at Step 3). Click on “Browse” to locate the review file on your computer, and click “Upload” to submit the file. Tip: It is not sufficient to choose the file and save and continue. You must also click “Upload” to upload the submission.
- Finally at Step 5, select a recommendation for the submission from the drop down list, which contains the following options: Accept Submission Revisions Required (“conditional accept”) Resubmit for Review (“revise and resubmit”) Resubmit Elsewhere Decline Submission See comments Send your review feedback and recommendation to the editor by clicking “Submit Review to Editor”. This feedback goes to IJSLE staff only; it is not provided directly to the author. If your review of a manuscript has not been received by the due date, you will receive a reminder. Please inform journal staff immediately if you are unable to undertake the review of a submission for any reason, so that another reviewer can be assigned.
