Author Guidelines

We welcome practical engineering design and research projects, service learning pedagogy, and projects detailing implementation of appropriate technologies as well as more appropriate theoretical works. Original articles up to 6500 words (normally between 2000 and 6000) including captions, bylines, notes, and references are required to be submitted electronically as Microsoft Word documents pending review. Final submission (following review and acceptance) will be as ‘pdf’ files.

Appropriate articles should be based on design and/or research projects directed as service projects, entrepreneurial efforts in service, or related service learning pedagogy. Authors are advised to ensure that their work is appropriately grounded in a review of existing literature. Submissions are accepted with the understanding that they will be subject to review and editorial revision and that they neither have been nor will be published elsewhere. Authors are encouraged to include a cover letter to the Editors with suggested reviewer names and emails or add those name/emails to the "Comments for the Editor" box at the start of the submission process.

Articles will be published under one of four categories:

  • Design Projects as Service
  • Research Projects as Service
  • Entrepreneurial Projects as Service
  • Pedagogy in Service Learning

Note: The journal is meant to provide an outlet for the work of undergraduate and graduate students as well as practicing engineers. Student submissions will only be considered if they are submitted with a faculty member.

The format of the article must follow the Formatting Guidelines. Please note that you must be logged in to our website to access the Formatting Guidelines.

All manuscripts and materials should be submitted through this website by registering as an author on this page.

The Editor-in-Chief may decline to consider a manuscript for several reasons, including inadequate evidence that the method is substantially new and promising, poor preparation, an insufficiently clear and detailed presentation, and a lack of adherence to the journal’s guidelines for manuscript preparation. The Editor-in-Chief reserves the right to reject manuscripts not clearly about service learning in engineering, as space permits. The Editor-in-Chief reserves the right to make the final decision when conflicts of editorial opinion arise. Once a manuscript has been accepted for consideration, it will be assigned to the Manuscript Editor for distribution to reviewers. Articles will be reviewed blindly by two or three persons with expertise in the area.

Please see the Publication Frequency section for Issue deadlines.
