Printing from Your Laptop (Mac)

If you have not been able to install the library printers successfully:

Mac printing requirements -- Read these first...

  1. You must have a Queen's NetID.
  2. Your laptop must be using Mac OS X 10.4.x (Tiger) or higher. Queen's Library cannot support older versions of Mac OS. For Windows users, go to Printing from Your Laptop (Windows).
  3. You must be able to connect to the Queen's campus network using a wired or wireless connection.


What do you have to do, to be able to print to the Library printers?

  1. Connect your laptop to the Queen's campus network. If you are connecting to the Queen's network for the first time, use one of the following methods:
  2. Locate the name of your laptop:
    • Click on the Apple icon located at the top left of the screen.
    • Click on About This Mac.
    • Click on More Info....
    • Title information at the top of System Profiler dialog box contains the name of the laptop.
    • Close dialog box and exit System Profiler.
  3. Locate the necessary printer information in the Library Print Queues table (below) before starting the printer installation process.
  4. Select the printer installation instructions that apply to your Mac operating system and library printer:
    • Laptops running Mac OS X 10.4.x (Tiger) or Mac OS X 10.5.x (Leopard)
      • All Library printers EXCEPT Douglas, Education and Stauffer Library Colour printers - Read instructions
      • Douglas, Education and Stauffer Library Colour Printers ONLY - Read instructions
    • Laptops running Mac OS X 10.6.x (Snow Leopard), Mac OS X 10.7.x (Lion), Mac OS X 10.8.x (Mountain Lion) or Mac OS X 10.9.x (Mavericks)
      • All Library printers EXCEPT Douglas, Education and Stauffer Library Colour printers - Read instructions
      • Douglas, Education and Stauffer Library Colour Printers ONLY - Read instructions

Instructions for laptops running Mac OS X 10.4.x (Tiger) or Mac OS X 10.5.x (Leopard) -- All Library printers EXCEPT Douglas, Education and Stauffer Library Colour printers

Douglas, Education and Stauffer Library Colour Printers ((Mac OS X 10.4.x (Tiger) or Mac OS X 10.5.x (Leopard)) - Read instructions

  1. Click on the Apple icon located in the top left corner of the screen and click on System Preferences.
  2. Click on Print & Fax and then click on the + in the dialog box to add a printer.
  3. Click on IP Printer icon located at the top of the next dialog box.
  4. Under Protocol, keep the option Line Printer Daemon.
  5. Using the appropriate printer information from the Library Print Queues table, complete the following:

  6. In the Address input box, type the IP address: 130.15.161.252.
  7. In the Queue input box, type the queue name from Library Print Queues table.
  8. In the Name input box, delete the IP address and type the queue name from Library Print Queues table.
  9. In the Location input box, type the name of the library (e.g. Stauffer Library).
  10. In the Print Using drop-down menu, select the appropriate library printer brand: HP.
  11. In the Model drop-down menu, select the appropriate model number from Library Print Queues table.
  12. Click on Add.

You will then be presented with the Installable Options dialog box...

  • To enable double-sided printing, click on the checkbox labeled Duplex Unit.
  • Click on Continue to complete installation.

Instructions for laptops running Mac OS X 10.4.x (Tiger) and Mac OS X 10.5.x (Leopard) -- Douglas, Education and Stauffer Library Colour Printers ONLY

All Library printers EXCEPT Douglas, Education and Stauffer Library Colour printers (Mac OS X 10.4.x (Tiger) or Mac OS X 10.5.x (Leopard)) - Read instructions

Printer drivers for this printer are not included in MAC OS X. Printer drivers must be downloaded from the HP website and installed on the laptop as follows:

  1. Go to: www.hp.com
  2. Click on Support & Drivers.
  3. Select Download drivers and software (and firmware).
  4. Enter product name: Use printer model name from Library Print Queues table
  5. Under Select operating system, click on: Mac OS X
  6. Scroll down to Software section and click on Download.
  7. Save the disk image file to the Desktop.
  8. After the downloading is completed, close all programs and double-click on the downloaded disk image file. A disk image icon and HP LaserJet installer window will appear. (If the HP LaserJet installer window does not appear, double-click on the disk image icon.)
  9. Double-click on the HP LaserJet printer icon in the HP LaserJet installer window. Follow the on-screen instructions to install the printer drivers.

Now that you've got the printer drivers, install the printer as follows:

  1. Click on the Apple icon located in the top left corner of the screen and click on System Preferences.
  2. Click on Print & Fax and then click on the + in the dialog box to add a printer.
  3. Click on IP Printer icon located at the top of the next dialog box.
  4. Under Protocol, keep the option Line Printer Daemon.
  5. Using the appropriate printer information from the Library Print Queues table, complete the following:

  6. In the Address input box, type the IP address: 130.15.161.252.
  7. In the Queue input box, type the queue name from Library Print Queues table
  8. In the Name input box, delete the IP address and type in the print queue name.
  9. In the Location input box, type the name of the library.
  10. In the Print Using drop-down menu, choose the appropriate library printer brand: HP.
  11. In the Model drop-down menu, select the appropriate printer model number from Library Print Queues table.
  12. Click on Add.

You will then be presented with the Installable Options dialog box... Select the installable options that are appropriate for the printer from the following table: 

 

Printer Location Installable Options

Douglas Library (EngSciColour)

  • Under Collation in Printer, select: Yes: Total RAM > = 160 MB or Hard...
  • Place a checkmark next to the following printer options:
    • Tray 3
    • Duplex Unit
  • Under Print Disk, select Ram Disk.
  • Click on Continue to complete installation.
Education Library (EducationCOLOUR)
  • Under Collation in Printer, select: Yes: Total RAM > = 288 MB or Hard...
  • Place a checkmark next to the printer option: Duplex Unit.
  • Click on Continue to complete installation.
Stauffer Library (StaufferCOLOUR)
  • Place a checkmark next to the following printer options:
    • Printer Disk
    • Duplex Unit
    • Tray 3
  • Click on Continue to complete installation.

When retrieving print jobs at the public printer station:

  • Print jobs sent from Mac laptops will appear on the Printer Station print job queue under the Mac laptop's name.



Instructions for laptops running Mac OS X 10.6.x (Snow Leopard), Mac OS X 10.7.x (Lion), Mac OS X 10.8.x (Mountain Lion) or Mac OS X 10.9.x (Mavericks) -- All Library printers EXCEPT Douglas, Education and Stauffer Library Colour printers

Douglas, Education and Stauffer Library Colour Printers (Snow Leopard, Lion and Mountain Lion) - Read instructions

  1. Click on the Apple icon located in the top left corner of the screen and click on Software Updates to search for updates.
  2. If software updates are found, install them.
  3. Click on the Apple icon located in the top left corner of the screen and click on System Preferences.
  4. Click on Print & Fax (or Print & Scan) and then click on the + in the dialog box to add a printer.
  5. Click on the IP icon located at the top of the next dialog box.
  6. Under Protocol, keep the option Line Printer Daemon
  7. Using the appropriate printer information from the Library Print Queues table, complete the following:

  8. In the Address input box, type the IP address: 130.15.161.252
  9. In the Queue input box, type the queue name from Library Print Queues table.
  10. In the Name input box, delete the IP address and type in the queue name from Library Print Queues table.
  11. In the Location input box, type the name of the library.
  12. In the Print Using (or Use:) drop-down menu, select Select a driver to use… (or Select printer software...)
  13. In the next drop-down menu, select the appropriate printer model by either typing the model name and number in the search box or by scrolling through the list of printers.
  14. Click on OK => Add (or OK).

You will then be presented with the Installable Options dialog box... Select the installable options that are appropriate for the printer from the following table:

Printer Location Installable Options
HP LaserJet 4300dtn / HP LaserJet 4350dtn
  • Place a checkmark next to the following printer options:
    • Tray 2
    • Tray 3
    • Duplex Unit
  • Under Total Printer Memory, select 384 - 416 MB.
  • Click on Continue to complete installation.
HP LaserJet 9050
(Stauffer Library - Ground Floor)
  • Place a checkmark next to the following printer options:
    • 2000-sheet Input Tray (Tray 4)
    • Duplex Unit
  • Under Printer Disk, select: RAM disk
  • Under Total Printer Memory, select: 384 - 512 MB
  • Click on Continue (or OK) to complete installation.

When retrieving print jobs from public printer station...

  • Print jobs sent from Mac laptops will appear on the Printer Station print job queue under the Mac laptop's name.
