Topical Subdivisions

IntroductionSearching for Subdivisions

Introduction

Topical subdivisions are used to make a subject heading more specific. The subject heading will be established on its own, and another authority record will be established for the subject heading together with the subject subdivision.

Each subdivision is preceded by a |x subfield code.

The exceptions to this practice will be dealt with in the documents on Free-Floating Subdivisions and Pattern Headings.

Searching for Subdivisions

You may search for the subject + subject subdivision authority record directly by entering the command:

fi jx image processing[space]-digital techniques

Remember that if your search retrieves no hits, it is a good idea to recheck the search by shortening the search string.

If a subject heading + subject subdivision authority record is not found, remember that the combination may be authorized because the subdivision is free-floating, or because it is authorized through a pattern heading. These will be dealt with in the documents on Free-Floating Subdivisions and Pattern Headings.
