- to provide service to Library users through creation, maintenance, and improvement of the intellectual content of the Online Catalogue to as high a standard as is feasible within the Queen's University Library context.
- to strive to make the Online Catalogue accurate, controlled, and complete in order to provide for ready access to and management of the catalogued collections of the Douglas and Stauffer Library system.

The Cataloguing Unit is responsible for:
- precataloguing search for cataloguing copy
- the bibliographic, holdings, item and authority records in the QCat database for all items in the collections of the Central Library, Faculty of Education Library, and Law Library.
- the processing of items to facilitate storage/shelving, retrieval and circulation (e.g. barcoding, flagging, labelling, etc.)
- catalogue standards, content, file maintenance, and input of data via staff-mode to achieve accurate OPAC information displays.
