Cataloguing copy which adheres to pre-AACR2 rules should be updated when it is entered into the system. These records may need to be typed directly into the library database, if the copy located is not in machine-readable form; however, this is no longer particularly common.
The oddities in old entries represent changes in catalogue rules and rule interpretations by the Library of Congress. The following are some common problems.

Many old entries do not use the modern ISBD punctuation. One can use the MARC codes with the old type of punctuation, but it is easier to follow one set of rules than two.
Of course, all access points should also be checked in the authority files, and revised as necessary to match the established heading. The following guidelines can also be helpful in locating the current version of the heading.

| Old Way | Smith, J A |
| New Way | Smith, J. A. |
Remove designators from behind personal names. |
|
| Old Way | Jones, Herman, jt. auth. |
| New Way | Jones, Herman. |
If the main entry has the designator ed. or comp. remove the designator. In addition, the heading should also be revised to become an added entry. Make the title the main entry, and re-cutter the work accordingly. Move the term Mrs. to its new position. |
|

Under the old rules, entries were much more likely to appear under a geographic place name first. While this is still possible, the entry is much more frequently entered directly. Check that the form of heading matches the correct AACR2 format in this regard. University names are one common type of corporate body that should be established in direct order. |
