In order for an item to be catalogued as a conference, it must meet the following criteria:
The conference must be a named conference.
- Generally the presence of an article and/or capitalization and/or the presence of a word or phrase that connotes a meeting indicate that the conference is named.
- eg. The Third National Conference on the Treatment of Conference Cataloguing
not: ".. from discussions deliberating on the treatment of conference cataloguing."
- Generic term names of meetings: a meeting is considered named when a generic term name refers to a meeting of the body, not one sponsored by the body.
- eg. Annual Meeting, or CLA Annual Meeting, or Annual Meeting of the Canadian Library Association are all considered named meetings. However when such a meeting is for two or more bodies, it it not considered named.
- Such generic term designations for sponsored meetings are considered named only if the name or the abbreviation for the name accompany the generic term.
- eg. unnamed: Symposium No. 95
- eg. named: CLA Symposium No. 95
- Exception: do not treat designations of the working sessions of these bodies as named (committees, commissions, panels, task forces, etc.).
- eg. unnamed: Seventh meeting of the Coordinating Committee for the Annual CLA Meeting.
- Form of name: for guidance on the correct form of name if it is not established consult AACR2 Chapter 24.7 and relevant sections of LCRI.

According to AACR2, a conference is the main entry for an item if it is named prominently in the item. Accordingly one can designate a named conference as main entry from the title page (of course), cover, t.p. verso, prominent in preface ....
- Main entry : According to AACR2 when a conference is named prominently on the item in hand, the conference name should be the main entry.
- eg. this could be taken from the t.p., cover, verso t.p., in preface.
- N.B. The Library of Congress has taken a narrow interpretation of this to mean that the conference must be named on the chief source of information only (i.e for book and serials format the t.p. or alternate in the absence of a tp.). For this reason we see LC copy with prominently named conferences designated as added, not main, entry. The problem here is that conferences are filing apart from one another from year to year on the basis of the yearly title. When we are doing original description or modifying records we will establish main entry according to AACR2 rules (i.e. based on prominence). This is consistent with LC's past practice, and the greater part of our data base.
- Added entry: criteria:
- Conference is named, but not prominently in item.
- Items which report jointly held conferences: enter second or third named conference as added entry. (only when non-generic name)
