Introduction

To identify CANMARC copy, check tag 040. CANMARC copy has been given a code beginning with "Ca" as source. If "DLC" appears after |d the item has been revised by the Library of Congress, and it may be catalogued as LC copy.

The section on General Guidelines for Handling Cataloguing Material should be consulted for information on what material to pass on to a librarian.

See also the sections on CANMARC Copy Cataloguing and Canadian Subject Headings.

Literary Works

Guidelines for Senior Cataloguing Assistants are already in effect with regard to the cataloguing of literary works. Canadian Literature (PS8000 and PS9000) should be reclassed according to established routines.

If anything on the copy appears questionable, refer the problem to a librarian.

Classification

Cutter numbers standing for authors or titles should if possible be adjusted to fit into our shelf list. If numbers in our shelf list appear to be double cuttered, and if the number you have is single cuttered, refer the classification number to a librarian.

For more information on classification numbers, see the section on Classification, particularly with regard to the suffixes "fol" and "Suppl."

Z class Personal Bibliography Numbers (Z8000+)

Numbers are assigned for individual authors in this portion of the Z classification schedule. Both the Library of Congress and the National Library of Canada assign new personal bibliography numbers as their collections require. Different numbers may have been assigned for the same author by these two libraries. Check the online shelflist for differences. Use the LC number by preferance.

An authority record may have been created for the personal bibliography number, under "<Name--Bibliography>". Verify what the call number should be with a librarian when in doubt.

Conference Call Numbers

Check the authority record under the conference heading for call number. Also check the database for other conferences with the same title. Using the information found in this manner, class all proceedings in the same number, adding the date of the conference (not the imprint date) to the basic classification number. Consult a librarian, if in doubt.
