It is Queen's policy to use the LC call number whenever possible. However, Queen's searches for and receives copy from a variety of sources. In addition, material is classified here at Queen's as well. The potential therefore exists for the same call number to be assigned for different titles, because the call number was assigned in different places.
Two different items should not have identical call numbers; each item should have a unique identifier. If two items do end up with an identical call number, it is necessary to reclassify one of them. If one call number was assigned by LC, reclassify the other. If neither was assigned by the Library of Congress, reclassify the one which seems to be the most out of place in our shelf list.
At one time, in an effort to cut down on the possible amount of reclassification, we used to add the date of publication plus the letter 't' to many of our call numbers. However, in this age of shared records, it is becoming harder and harder to determine when the Library of Congress has had an effect on the call number. The use of a 'date and t' combination has now been greatly restricted.
You should still add a date and 't' under the circumstances described below:

Add date and "t" to a call number when the entire classification number has been assigned by someone at Queen's.
Do not add a date and 't' even when the number is assigned at Queen's for items in FC or in PS8XXX and PS9XXX.

Add date and "t" to the call number when the call number is incomplete (i.e. missing the last cutter number). If the cataloguing copy contains only the basic number, but you still need to complete the number, add the date and 't'. This would not apply if you are combining information from various different records, and are using a complete call number from one of the alternative records.

It is never necessary to add a date and 't' to a call number based on non-LC classification, such as the PS8XXX and PS 9XXX literary numbers.
The date and 't' should be added to a non-Canadian literary number, if the base number was assigned at Queen's. Any literary number assigned locally should be added to the authority record for the author.
If LC should assign a number for the author at a later date, then the works can be reclassified to match the new number.

When the cataloguing copy originates with an NUC contributing library (not LC) some of the other libraries may use a different letter than 't',
040 |a MH |b eng |c DLC
050 |a PQ2003.Z5 |b T73x 1987
Remove the "x" after the cutter number. Call number on the book will be: PQ2003.Z5 T73 1987
Please also note that the National Library of Canada uses a different shelflisting table for Regions and Countries, and particularly for the Canadian Provinces. Please alter any such numbers to match the Regions and Countries and Canadian Provinces tables as used by LC, according to the guidelines set out in Adjusting First Cutters from Canadiana and Other Copy.

When you find a call number assigned by CaOONL with "fol" at the end, delete "fol" and use date instead. See also the section on CANMARC Copy Cataloguing.

When you find a call number assigned by CaOONL with "suppl" at the end, check to see whether Queen's holds the item for which you have the supplement. If yes, use the call no. already assigned by DL and add "suppl" to it. If no, use date instead of "suppl". See also the section on CANMARC Copy Cataloguing.
