- assign a broad class number
- add an accession number — one number per title — the next consecutive number available in that class, determined from a search of the call number index or shelf list.
- if there is more than one reel per title, assign one barcode only but indicate the correct number of "pieces" in the item record.

- serials are filed alphabetically by main entry (usually title)
- assign only the designation, "Microfilm"
- do not use broad class numbers
- number the reels within each title, as necessary.

- use call no. as follows: "Microfiche"
- for SL, add the drawer no. if the information is available on accompanying material
- microfiche sheets are filed alphabetically by main entry in the SL periodicals room or specific branch sublocation

- microfiche of theses are filed alphabetically by author in the Documents microfiche area — currently in drawer no. 390
- usually, the microfiche is an added copy to the paper edition and is entered on the same bibliographic record
