Introduction

The Toolkit Options provides information on connecting to the Voyager database, and how the Toolkit will operate while doing so.

Options Button

The options can be accessed by clicking on the Control panel button. Once you have done so, you will be presented with a window containing a number of tabs. The most straight forward of these is the "About" tab, which presents information regarding the version of the Toolkit you have installed on your computer.

About Option Tab

The information found in the "About" box can be useful when attempting to troubleshoot a problem with the program, as it gives the details about the exact version you have installed.

Connections

The most crucial options are set in the Connections tab. Unless something is set here, the Toolkit simply will not operate.

This tab needs to have at least one connection set before you can use the Toolkit. The first connection should always be the one that identifies the Voyager database. Any others will be additional resource databases from which you are able to extract information.

Connections Option Tab

This will be set up for you when the Toolkit is installed. You should normally close the Toolkit and start it up again after you make any changes to the connection to Voyager.

A new connection is created by clicking on the New button; to change an existing connection, select it from the list, and click on Change. The information regarding the connection will appear on the right hand side of the panel.

Connections Option Tab

The name of the connection can be anything you choose.

The DSN records the ODBC information created for you to link to the database. Type, Character set, Table prefix, and version all record information about linking to the database.

Read UID and Read PWB allow you to link directly to the Oracle database, and retrieve information from it.

Write UID and Write PWD record your personal user ID and password. These identify you to the Voyager client, and allows the Toolkit to assist you with making changes of the kind you have permission to perform.

The Oracle schema records the user ID which allows you to access certain files of routines on the server which you can then make use of. These are not currently set up at Queen's, but may be in the future.

General

This tab contains general information that doesn't fit anywhere else.

General Option Tab

The following items are recorded here:

Your initials:
You would record your initials or other identifier here. This information is included when you use the Toolkit to print out a report.
Start-of-Field-Character
This indicates the character that the Toolkit should use at the start of each variable field in its own full-record displays. In most cases, a space (character 32) works best.
Vger owning library:
The owning library. This is primarily used by the Toolkit when previewing downloaded records, to determine if they should be counted as duplicates.
Vger cataloguing 'happening' location:
The 'happening location' you use in Voyager. Only locations you are able to use will appear in this list. Currently, both the long form and the short form of the locations are appearing in the drop-down list; if you select the long form, it will default to the short form of the location.
Main form 'always on top'
This should be checked if you always want the Toolkit to appear 'on top' of all other running programs.
Subsidiary form 'always on top'
The Toolkit also displays a number of other different windows when it is performing it's various tasks. Checking this box ensures that these windows remain 'on top' of all other running programs.
Use underscore separator in fixed fields:
If this box is checked, then fixed field labels and values are linked together by an underscore. This keeps them together if the line wraps.
Enable 'alt' key shortcuts for buttons
Checking this box will allow you to use keyboard shortcuts for the various buttons. If you hover your cursor over a button, what it does and the keyboard shortcut will appear.

Rearranging the Buttons

Not all of the buttons available within the Toolkit are for general use. Within this option display panel, you may select which buttons will appear on the toolkit.

Buttons Option Tab

Simply drag and drop the buttons you do not wish to appear from the "visible" to the "hidden" area, and vice versa. You may rearrange the buttons in the same way, by dragging them to their new location(s).

The Toolkit preferences have now been rearranged so that the options that apply to specific buttons can be accessed through this panel.

Options Enabled

Some of the options of the Toolkit are not ones you need to work with most of the time. You can choose to select only certain options to appear when you click on this button.

Options Enabled Tab

Also, the Library may choose to make certain options unavailable in some of the Toolkit installations; once the "Options enabled" tab is disabled, this can't be reversed without deleting the preferences or reinstalling the toolkit.

NUC Codes

This panel tells the Toolkit which NUC codes to use in new records..

NUC Codes Option Tab

The NUC code root should be the same for all Queen's installations; however, codes such as CaOKQL, CaOKQD and CaOKQH may be used where appropriate for the NUC code for authority records and the NUC code for bibliographic records.
