Import to RefWorks - Engineering and Science

RefWorks is a citation management program that is freely available to all Queen's staff, students, and faculty.

Database Import Filter Import/Export to RefWorks
ACM Digital Library BibTeX
  1. Select/Click on full citation.
  2. Click on BibTeX format.
  3. Copy and paste the results into a document and Save As a plain text .txt file.
  4. Open RefWorks and choose References > Import .
  5. Select BibTeX as the Import Filter and ACM Digital Library as the Database
  6. Browse to the file and click on Import
Agricola
Endeavor Voyager
  1. Conduct search and mark the citations you wish to import.
  2. Scroll to the bottom of the page and under Select Records choose Marked on this Page ; in the box labeled Select Format choose Export Format , then click Format for Print or Save .
  3. Save the results as plain text (.txt) to import into RefWorks.
  4. Open RefWorks and choose References > Import
  5. Select  Endeavor Voyager  as the Import Filter/Data Source and AGRICOLA as the Database.
  6. Choose Import Data from the following Text File and browse for your saved text file. Click Import .
Annual Reviews BibTex
  1. Conduct search and mark citations.
  2. Click on Download to Citation Manager .
  3. Select BibTex as the file format.
  4. Click on Download Chapter Metadata .
  5. Save the .bib file.
  6. In Refworks import the .bib file using BibTex as the Import Filter, and Multiple Databases as the Database .
Applied Science & Technology  
  1. Mark citations and click on Get Marked (bottom of page)
  2. Click Exporting/Citing (top of page)
  3. Click Export to RefWorks, Endnote software .
  4. Under "Download Record(s) into:", select RefWorks' Direct Export Tool .
  5. Click Export .
ASCE Research Library RefWorks Tagged Format
  1. Conduct search and mark the citations you wish to import
  2. Under "Article Options" click on: Download Citations in RefWorks
  3. Save as a .txt file
  4. Open RefWorks and choose References >Import.
  5. Select RefWorks Tagged Format as the Import Filter and Tagged Format as the Database
  6. Browse to the saved .txt file and click on Import

CISTI Source CISTI Source
  1. Conduct your search and mark the records you want to import.
  2. Click on Selections and then click E-mail.
  3. Enter your e-mail address and click Go.
  4. Open RefWorks and select References >Import from the toolbar
  5. Select CISTI Source as the import filter and select the appropriate database.
  6. Paste the text from the e-mail into Import Data from the Following Text area.
  7. Click Import .
  8. Your records should appear in the Last Imported Folder .
Compendex(via Engineering Village)
Direct Export
  1. Mark the citations you wish to save.
  2. Just above your list of citations is a box labeled, Results Manager.
    Choose format then click the box labeled Download.
  3. Choose the radio button, RefWorks direct import and click Download. References will be imported directly into RefWorks.

  1. Select and connect to the desired database, perform a topic search and view the results list. Then:
  2. Mark records.
  3. Click RefWorks .
  4. Select either Marked Records or Use Records from the Current Search .
  5. Select Export to RefWorks .

Geoscience World BibTex
  1. Conduct search and mark the citations you wish to import.
  2. Choose Download to Citation Manager and click Go
  3. Click on Download ALL Selected Citations to Citation Manager
  4. Click on BibTex and save as a .txt file
  5. Open RefWorks and click on References >Import
  6. Choose BibTex as the Import Filter and Multiple Databases as the Database
  7. Browse for your saved file and click Import .
IEEE EXplore RIS Format
  1. Perform search and choose display format for the individual references you wish to export.
  2. Click on View Selected Items .
  3. In the Download Citation section on the left side of the screen, select Citation with Abstract and EndNote , ProCite and Reference Manager and click the download symbol.
  4. Save as a .txt file
  5. Open RefWorks and click on References >Import
  6. Select RIS Format as the Import Filter/Data Source and IEEE as the Database.
  7. Browse for your saved file and click Import .
INSPEC (Eng Village)   See Compendex
JSTOR       JSTOR
  1. Click Save Citation (at the end of each record) and then View Saved Citations
  2. Select Export Citations as a text file in citation manager format and then click Export
  3. Save as a text file.
  4. Open RefWorks and select JSTOR as the Import Filter and JSTOR as the database
  5. Browse to your saved file and select Import.
MathSciNet BibTex
  1. Mark records to import by checking the boxes next to the citations.
  2. From the top dropdown menu, change Reviews (HTML) to Citations (BibTex) and click Retrieve Marked.
  3. Copy the text (Ctrl C).
  4. In Refworks select References > Import.
  5. From the dropdown box for Import Filter/Data Source, select BibTeX.
  6. From the Database dropdown box, select MathSciNet.
  7. In the box under Import Data from the following Text. Paste the citations (Ctrl V) and click Import.

  1. Mark the citations you wish to import
  2. Select Export (above first entry)
  3. Select Export Directly to RefWorks
PubMed NLM PubMed
  1. Mark the citations you wish to import
  2. Change the menu Display to Medline and select Text in the "Send to" pulldown menu.
  3. Select all of the text (Control + A), copy (Control + C)
  4. Login to your RefWorks account and select References > Import
  5. Select NLM PubMed as your Import Filter/DataSource
  6. Select PubMed as your Database
  7. Click on Import Data from the following text button
  8. Paste your information in the window and click Import

CAS SciFinder
  1. Click in the box to left of desired citations.
  2. Click on Save As (located on the navigation bar)
  3. Identify your disk drive and filename plus the extension .txt (plain text) in the File Name Box .
  4. Select Tagged Format (*.txt) from the Save as type drop-down menu and save.
  5. In Refworks click on References and Import at the top of the screen.
  6. Select CAS SciFinder as the Import Filter/Data Source
  7. Select Multiple Databases as the database.
  8. At the Import Data from the following Text File box select the file name of your saved records.
  9. Click on Import.
Scirus RIS Format
  1. Select the references you want to export.
  2. Select the Export Checked Results button.
  3. Select RIS format and click on Export and save
  4. Log in to RefWorks and import text file.
  5. Select RIS Format as the Import Filter/Data Sourceand Scirus as the database and click Import.
Web of Science/
Web of Knowledge

Biosis Previews
ISI
  1. Select the record(s) to include in the output
  2. Click Click Save to EndNote, RefMan, or other Reference Software (bottom of the page)
  3. Click on Export and save as a .txt file
  4. Open RefWorks and click on References > Import
  5. Select ISI (Institute for Scientific Information) as the Import Filter and Web of Science as the database.
  6. Browse to find the text file and click Import.
