Queen's University Library

Research Services

The Engineering and Science Library provides a variety of services for Queen's researchers, including faculty, post doctorate fellows and research centre staff. We encourage you to make an appointment to meet with a librarian or request that a librarian visit your office or lab for any of the following services.

Research Assistance

The Engineering and Science Library provides access to dozens of research databases and thousands of electronic books and journals, in addition to more than 330,000 bound volumes, technical reports and standards. Our librarians will provide advice on in-depth research questions, how to plan a research strategy and selecting the best research tools in your discipline.

Literature Searches

A comprehensive literature search is one of the most important elements in the research process. In addition to dozens of library-licensed databases such as Inspec and Compendex, our librarians can search hundreds of subject-specific commercial databases for recent and retrospective scientific literature. Some of the commercial databases we can search for a fee include:

  • Biotechnology and Bioengineering Abstracts
  • Global Mobility Database (Society of Automotive Engineers)
  • Mechanical and Transportation Engineering Abstracts
  • Pollution Abstracts

Search reports and lists of references can be sent to you electronically or by campus mail. Fees may be paid from a university research account.

Our librarians will also provide assistance in verifying citations, tracking references and locating obscure documents such as foreign publications, theses, standards, preprints and technical reports. For document delivery and interlibrary loan requests, please use RACER.

Patent Searches

Patent literature is an increasingly important source of information on new innovations and emerging technologies, especially in the life sciences and biotechnology. Our librarians can conduct preliminary patent searches in specific fields of technology, search inventor and ownership information and research patent status. We will also retrieve copies of patent documents and locate translations of foreign patents.

Database Training

Our librarians offer one-on-one and group database training that can be tailored to a specific research team or project. We will provide training on any of our numerous licensed research databases, electronic books and journals and information management tools. Our training sessions cover effective search strategies, evaluating information sources and new tools such as table of content alert services and RSS feeds.
