Young Canada: Early Canadian Children's Literature
June - August, 2016

In 1912 the Toronto Public Library established the Boys’ and Girls’ Division led by Lillian H Smith, the first children’s librarian in Canada, marking a shift in how children’s literature was perceived throughout Canada. With this new division identifying what books children enjoyed became a priority while also inspiring the need for uniquely Canadian children’s literature. This exhibit captures the early history of this genre beginning with settlers’ guides and adventure stories to examining the various formats through which children read.
