Queen's
Classification Schedule (AN)
for Newspapers

[*   Introduction  |  *   AN Classification Schedule  |  *   Table of Contents (Subject Analysis)  |  * Table of Contents (Top)]

Introduction

In the summer of 1996, it was decided that the collection of material on microfilm held at Queen's University would be more easily accessible to the library patrons if it was arranged in call number order. However, no LC sanctioned classification schedule for newspaper currently exists. It was therefore decided to create such a schedule in the AN classification area, which has been set aside by the Library of Congress for classifying newspapers.

It was then decided to apply this classification schedule to all newspapers.

This classification schedule is loosely based on the AP schedule for periodicals. The area under "Canada" has been expanded for distinction by province or territory.

Please note that except for French Canadian newspapers all foreign language newspapers are classed with the language. For example, a Welsh language newspaper published in Canada will be classed in AN77.
