Theses

Copies of Law theses are now given the location code "ll" and housed as part of the main collection, with Item type Book. They are classed together in call number KE322.Q9 (+ author cutter + date). Older theses were converted into this number by students working in the Law Library, using a different cutter table from that used in Cataloguing, and often with a third cutter added for the title. Theses added in Cataloguing should be worked in around the existing numbers as far as possible, but if there is a need to add a second thesis for the same person, a "2" should be added to the cutter number rather than using a third cutter.

Formerly Law theses were kept on reserve, and at one time were given a non-LC number beginning with KY, followed by a cutter number for the author. Any KYs that remain in the database are probably missing.

Course Materials and Other Local Materials

Law course books (i.e. collections of readings put together by a professor for students in a particular course) are classed together in KE322.Q92, cuttered for Professor (cutter adjusted if more than one) with date added. Law Library staff may update existing records for course books, replacing old editions (which are not retained) with new editions. Not much time should be spent on any of these that come to Cataloguing; the most important access point is the professor's name. Location will normally be "ll" for Law Library stacks, with Item type Book (In the past, the Law Library used a non-LC number beginning with KX for course books . The course books number was cuttered for Professor and then for the title.)

Guides to legal research created specifically for the Queen's Law Library are classed in KE322.Q93, cuttered by title. Other, miscellaneous, Queen's-related items are classed in KE322.Q94 and cuttered for main entry.
