Bracken's Role in the Community
Bracken Health Sciences Library was the first academic health sciences library in Ontario to establish unique partnerships with community hospitals and health care providers. Since 2000, Bracken has developed several partnerships within the Southeastern Ontario region. These partnerships provide community health care professionals, clinicians, administrators and students access to a customized suite of health information services from their desktops via Bracken Health Sciences Library at Queen's University. The objective of these partnerships is to provide point-of-need information necessary to provide the highest quality of evidence-based patient care, teaching and research.
Current partners include:
- Hotel Dieu Hospital (Kingston);
- Northumberland Hills Hospital (Cobourg);
- Quinte Health Care Corporation (Belleville, Picton, Trenton & Bancroft locations)
What services are available to Bracken's outreach partners?
Each partnership is unique. What we consider the building blocks of an electronic or "virtual" library environment are information and reference services, document delivery, a customized suite of electronic resources that are accessed through a customized web interface, and training and education services. It is fundamental to the success of virtual libraries that participants are able to access a team of reference librarians either in person; by phone; or email. Librarians will conduct literature searches or answer information requests using our extensive collections. For those who prefer to search for information themselves, librarians offer ongoing assistance in developing effective search strategies.
A few of the e-resources we have been able to provide to our partners include:
- full text electronic journals
- Proquest Nursing & Allied Health Source
- Books@Ovid (full text)
- STAT!Ref electronic books (full text)
- BMJ Best Practice
- Mosby's Nursing Consult
- Access Medicine
- Other databases as requested
