In recognition of Ontario’s Archives Awareness Week, April 2-5, we are highlighting an important collection held at the Queen’s University Archives: the Daniel George W. MacMartin Collection

Daniel George W. MacMartin (also McMartin; 1844-1923) was a mining engineer from Perth, Ontario, though he is best known for his role as treaty commissioner for Treaty 9, or the James Bay Treaty. MacMartin was part of a treaty delegation that travelled to the James Bay region of Ontario in the summers of 1905 and 1906 to negotiate with First Nations in the area. Throughout his travels MacMartin kept a personal diary, wherein he described the treaty negotiation process as he observed it. That personal diary now forms the basis of the Daniel George W. MacMartin Collection, which also contains transcriptions and ancillary materials.
