About the library

Queen’s University Library inspires learning, sparks creativity and builds community. Entering our libraries – virtual and physical – our students and faculty feel the world at their fingertips, the knowledge of the ages and the potential of the future. This community of learning and research, this library, is the keystone of our balanced academy where people engage deeply with each other to ask critical questions and build new ideas.

Borrowing

The circulation policies at Queen's University Library are designed to enable maximum yet equitable use of, and access to, the Library's collections. First priority is given to supporting the teaching, learning and research programs of the University.  Patrons of other post-secondary institutions in the Kingston area and beyond, as well as Queen's alumni and members of the community, are welcome to use the collections on site or in accordance with the following policies:

More borrowing information

Library users can access their account online to view the items currently on loan, place and track requests, and view any fines and fees.

Queen's students, faculty and staff can use their student/staff card to borrow materials and have standard loan periods on most items.

There are no overdue fines on regular material.  Reserve and recalled items will incur late fines.

Regular borrowed items not renewed or returned within 30 days of expiry will have a lost status applied to your account. Failure to return Reserves material that is overdue by 7 days will have a lost status applied to your account.

The standard replacement fee for lost items is $125.

For all patrons, outstanding charges above specified Account Limits, as well as failure to return overdue or recalled material, will lead to a "block" on the borrower's record and suspension of all borrowing privileges. Once the outstanding items have been returned and fines paid, normal borrowing privileges are restored.

Queen's alumni and members of the Kingston community can borrow a wide variety of library material.

Many books in the Art Collection are “non-circulating” because they are expensive and difficult to replace, including exhibition catalogs and catalogues raisonnés. Other libraries do not lend these works and they are rarely available for purchase as e-books. It is part of the library's collection stewardship of these special materials that they do not generally circulate. Please see the Art History guide for a description of the full range of criteria used to determine circulation status.
