The Centre for Teaching and Learning, in collaboration with Queen's University Library and Student Academic Success Services, is excited to announce a thought-provoking Speaker Series - Language is Power! These workshops reframe the production and use of language as significant human acts in the age of AI and highlight how the development of critical literacy skills is central to the formation of identities, critical thinking, and civic engagement. We are excited to announce the first in our series: 

Who Holds Linguistic Power in the Higher Ed Classroom? From Awareness to Action 

Speaker: Dr. Samantha Jackson, University of Toronto 

When: Thursday, October 22, 2026 | 10:30 AM to 12:00 PM

Dr. Jackson will outline how linguistic hierarchies show up in course design, assessment, and classroom interaction, and offer practical strategies to make classrooms more linguistically just. Topics include the hidden curriculum, assumptions about academic language, how standard English is privileged, and ways to reduce barriers to participation, learning, and success.
