Getting Started with Read&Write


Introduction

TextHelp Read&Write is a text to speech software toolbar that includes features that assist with reading comprehension and writing assignments. Anyone with an active @queensu.ca email can download Read&Write to their own devices for free or use it on our public library computers.

Download on your own device

Queen’s students, staff, and faculty can download Read&Write on their own devices for free. Read&Write is available for Windows desktop, Mac desktop, iOS app, Android app, and browser extension. Follow the steps to download Read&Write.

Go to the Read&Write for Education website. Click the purple "Start your trial today" button.

You will be prompted to fill out a short form. Answer the questions to the best of your ability, then select the pink "Start your free trial" button.

Choose which option is best for you:

  • Windows (CAN) desktop version
  • Mac desktop version
  • iPad app
  • Android app
  • Microsoft Edge browser extension
  • Google Chrome browser extension

If you have access to a desktop/laptop, our Adaptive Technologist recommends the desktop version. 

Discover the features of each version of Read&Write

Navigate to your “Downloads” folder and select Read&Write. Follow the installation instructions detailed by the installation wizard. Each version will have its own installation instructions. 

After the installation, you can open Read&Write clicking/tapping its icon. The icon is a purple puzzle piece with “rw” written in white in the middle. If prompted to log in, select “Log in with Microsoft” and log in with your Queen’s email (NetID@queensu.ca) and password.

Access on public library computers

Each of our public library computers have Read&Write for Windows installed. If you do not have an active @queensu.ca email, you will not be able to access Read&Write on our public library computers. Follow the steps to access Read&Write.

Log into a public library computer using your Queen’s NetID and password.

Open Read&Write by double clicking the Read&Write icon on the desktop. This icon is a purple puzzle piece with “rw” written in white in the centre.

Select “Log in with Microsoft”. Use your Queen’s email (NetID@queensu.ca) and password. The Read&Write toolbar will launch.

Please note: if you do not have a Queen’s email, you will not be able to access Read&Write on our public library computers. If you could benefit from a screen reader, please reach out to Library Accessibility Services at library.atc@queensu.ca to discuss options.
