About Research Data Management

Research data management (RDM) refers to the activities applied throughout the lifecycle of a research project that guide planning, collection, documentation, storage, sharing, and preservation of research data (Tri-Agency 2021).

RDM activities are integral to conducting responsible research and can help researchers save time and resources by ensuring data are complete, understandable, and secure:

  • Develop a data management plan (DMP) to ensure effective management of your data.
  • Meet grant and publishing requirements and ensure compliance with ethics and privacy policies.
  • Increase the impact and visibility of research results.
  • Encourage the discovery and reuse of research data.
  • Safeguard research data for future reuse through long-term preservation and stewardship.
