Queen’s University Library and the Vice-Principal Research Portfolio are delighted to announce the launch of a new Research Data Management 101 training course open to anyone in the Queen’s research community.

Geared towards graduate students and early career researchers, this self-directed course introduces key research data management (RDM) concepts, explores the benefits of strong RDM practices, includes interactive learning activities, and highlights the tools, resources, and support services available at Queen’s. Supervisors and research staff may also find the course helpful for supporting students and team members.

The course contains four modules that can be completed at the learner's own pace:

  1. What is RDM and why is it important?
  2. Planning with a data management plan (DMP)
  3. Active data management
  4. Data Deposit, Sharing, and Preservation

In today’s evolving research landscape, strong research data management skills are essential. The TriAgency Research Data Management Policy (2021) requires institutions and researchers to adopt robust data management practices, including creating data management plans and preparing data for deposit into a research data repository. This course helps researchers build these competencies early, ensuring they are well prepared to meet funder and journal publisher requirements while also strengthening the quality, transparency, and impact of their work. By developing practical, foundational RDM skills, participants will be better equipped to manage their data throughout the research lifecycle and to contribute to a culture of open, rigorous, and well documented research and scholarship at Queen’s.

The course is available to anyone in the Queen’s community through onQ. Please reach out to the library’s RDM team with any questions or feedback.
