Photographing & Scanning Guidelines

When reproductions are used for publication, exhibition, or web sites, images must be captioned: “Image courtesy of W.D. Jordan Rare Books and Special Collections, Queen’s University, Kingston, Ontario.”

Guidelines

  • Photography of library materials for personal research purposes is allowed in the Reading Room, provided that the item is in good condition. Staff may supervise or limit photography of fragile materials or materials with known copyright restrictions.
  • Cameras, including cell phones or iPads, are allowed with the flash disabled. However, additional equipment, such as tripods or lights, is not permitted.
  • Photography of other researchers or library staff is forbidden.
  • Researchers are responsible for obtaining copyright permissions to publish photographs of materials from our collections. 

Guidelines

  • Scanning may be available, based on the condition of the material.
  • All requests are subject to copyright and fair-dealing guidelines.   Large scanning requests (more than 50 pages) may be directed to Interlibrary Loan.  
  • Researchers are responsible for obtaining copyright permissions to publish scans of material from our collections.

  • Interlibrary loans to other academic libraries may be arranged, depending on a number of factors, through our Interlibrary Loan Service.  The borrowing library must retain the items in a locked, special collections reading room while being used by their patron.
  • When reproductions are used for publication, exhibition, or web sites, images must be     captioned: “Image courtesy of W.D. Jordan Rare Books and Special Collections, Queen’s     University, Kingston, Ontario.”
